授課目標：
Quine是二十世紀後半葉分析哲學最富影響力的大師之一，在語言哲學、存有學、知識論、與科學哲學等等，都具有深刻的洞見。其哲學的核心，環繞著他對意義概念的批判，進而連結到他在存有學 (ontological relativity)、知識論 (naturalistic epistemology)、與科學哲學 (the thesis of under-determination)上的種種理論。
Quine以反對分析／綜合語句的區分 (the distinction of analytic/synthetic sentences) 聞名，伴隨其意義懷疑論所發展的語意理論，以語意是不可確定 (indeterminate)為核心，以對語言表式經驗內容 (empirical content) 的討論，來取代傳統上對意義問題的探究。
為了讓大家對這一套影響深遠的語言哲學理論，能夠有細緻的瞭解，本課程將講授第一手的Quine著作。重點尤其放在Word and Object的第二章，讓大家對 “翻譯的不確定性” (indeterminacy of translation) 這項理論的基本論述，能夠有完整的認識。另一個重點是Quine對觀察語句和科學理論之經驗內容的說明，以此來理解在意義懷疑論的大纛之下，Quine如何提出一套替代理論，並將經驗內容與證據合流。

授課大綱：
第一週：“Five Milestones of Empiricism”，介紹Quine對經驗主義發展的看法。
第二週：“Two Dogmas of Empiricism”，第一到四節。Quine對當時 (1953年以前) 盛行意義理論的批評。
第三週：“Two Dogmas of Empiricism”，第五節。Quine反對分析／綜合語句區分的現象主義 (phenomenalist) 整體論論證。
第四週：“Two Dogmas of Empiricism”，第六節。Quine反對分析／綜合語句區分的證實主義 (verificationist) 整體論論證。
第五週：Word and Object, chapter two第七、八節，根本翻譯 (radical translation) 與刺激意義 (stimulus meaning)。
第六週：Word and Object, chapter two第九節，刺激意義和語句分類—反駁分析／綜合語句區分的行為主義論證。
第七週：Word and Object, chapter two第十節，觀察語句。
第八週：第十一節，情境語句 (occasion sentences) 的相互主體同義性 (intersubjective synonymy)。
第九週：Word and Object, chapter two第十二節，語詞的同義以及指涉的不可測度，及其支持翻譯不確定性的論證。
第十週：Word and Object, chapter two第十三節，邏輯連詞的翻譯；第十四節，同義句與分析句。
第十一週：Word and Object, chapter two第十五節，分析假說 (analytic hypotheses) 與翻譯的不確定性。
第十二週：“On Empirically Equivalent Systems of the World”一，討論不可限定說與整體論的邏輯關係，並對不可限定說進行細部討論。
第十三週：“Empirical Content”，討論Quine對觀察語句的三個定義 (第一與第二個分別在Word and Object及“On Empirically Equivalent Systems of the World”)。
第十四週：“In Praise of Observation Sentences. With Appendix on Neural Intake.”，以及觀察語句主要定義與反駁分析／綜合句區分的整體論論證間的不相容。
第十五週：“Checkpoints and Empirical Content” (From Stimulus to Science, Ch. 4)，理論的經驗內容—從observation conditionals到observation categoricals。
第十六週：“Evidence” (Pursuit of Truth, Ch. 1)，經驗內容與證據支持。
第十七週：總結－問題與討論。
第十八週：期末考。

評量方式：
無期中考。除第一週外，每人至少負責報告單週主題一次，時間為20—30分鐘，並接受10—15分鐘的師生提問 (每人於學期內至少高品質提問三次，多多益善)。期末由三個給定題目挑選其一 (題目期中公布)，撰寫五千字以內之論文，需符合標準學術論文格式，並附200字以內之英文摘要 (abstract)。自十四週起，可先行提出報告草稿與授課老師討論，每人一次。
出席情況10%，課堂表現40% (包含報告與提問參與)，期末報告50%。
