蔡淑卿[論文摘要]

          本篇論文主要探討意識經驗是否可被科學研究的問題.科學理論認為,如果科學沒有研究出主體性是什麼,那麼科學便無法說明意識現象是什麼.基本上,我並不否認主體性在意識現象中的重要地位.但我認為主體性並不是科學研究的對象.摩亙(McGinn)相信科學不能研究意識現象.我同意他這個想法.他從研究意識現象的方法這個路徑去探討這個不可能性,不過因他未能提供我們一個窮盡所有方法的論證,以致無法達成這個結論.瑟爾(Searle)認為科學可以研究意識現象,但我認為其所研究的並不是意識本身.本篇論文想藉由爵士奇(Dretske)的表徵理論(the Representational Thesis)對意識現象的解釋,去釐清瑟爾所謂的科學可以研究意識現象究竟意味什麼.我想藉由以上的結果,更進一步去釐清我們對主體性的認知.雖然主體性可以被知道存在,但卻無法被描述,所以他不是科學的研究對象.

    The problem in this thesis is whether conscious experience can be studied by science. Scientists think, if science doesn't study whatsubjectivity is, then science cannot explain what conscious experiences are.McGinn thinks that  science cannot study the nature of consciousness. Heexplains the problem from the method of observation, but he doesn't give us anargument of exhausting all methods so that he cannot get the mentionedconclusion. And Searle thinks that science can study conscious experience, butI think that what science studies is not consciousness itself. I will explainwhat conscious experiences are in terms of the Representational Thesis in thisthesis. Further, I will clear up our cognition of subjectivity. Although theexistence of subjectivity can be known but it cannot be described, so it is notthe subject of science.
